Support the Voyage

Learn how you can support our non-profit mission to build and sail the Gokstad ship replica and promote maritime heritage.

Supporting Vinlandferth

Vinlandferth is working to build an authentic replica of the 9th-century Gokstad ship using traditional Viking construction methods. This is a project rooted in historical research, hands-on craftsmanship, and community education, with the long-term goal of sailing across the Atlantic.

What Your Support Makes Possible

Ship Construction

Building a faithful Gokstad replica requires materials and methods consistent with the original: oak for the hull planks, keel, and ribs; pine for the mast and decking; iron rivets hand-forged in the traditional style; and caulking made from animal hair proofed with tar. Every component must meet the standards of the original: a 15-meter hull of 16 strakes per side, a T-shaped keel carved from a single oak trunk, and a 110-square-meter wool sail. Donations directly fund the acquisition of these materials and the skilled labor at the Viking Ship Museum boatyard in Denmark where the ship is being built.

Education and Outreach

The construction process itself is an educational opportunity. Viking shipwrights, known in Old Norse as skipasmidr, passed their knowledge through generations without written plans, working from tradition and experience. By documenting and sharing each stage of the build, Vinlandferth aims to preserve these techniques and make them accessible to the public. Your support helps fund educational programming that connects communities with the seafaring traditions that shaped history.

Voyage Preparation

In 1893, Captain Magnus Andersen and a crew of twelve sailed a Gokstad replica from Bergen, Norway, to Chicago in a journey that proved Viking ships were capable of Atlantic crossings. Since then, the Gaia (1991) and the Islendingur (2000) have made similar voyages. Preparing for a transatlantic crossing requires crew training in traditional navigation and seamanship, safety equipment, and extensive logistical planning. Contributions help make this ambitious goal a reality.
